Meet the staff for the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning.
Janet (Jan) Paterson began her role as interim director for civic engagement in August 2015. Prior to that she served as dean of students at Illinois State University for 10 years. Jan also teaches in the College Student Personnel Administration program in the College of Education. At previous institutions she worked in student activities, human resources, conference planning and residence life. Jan has co-authored several professional articles/chapters and made numerous presentations at professional association meetings.
Jan received her B.A. from Millikin University (Decatur, IL), her M.S. from Indiana University – Bloomington, and her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.

Christine Bruckner started as the Assistant Director of Assessment, Data Management, and Grant Writing in December 2016. Before working for the center, Christine was a Research and Planning Analyst for the Office of Planning, Research, and Policy Analysis at Illinois State University. Prior to working at Illinois State, she worked as a Research and Program Evaluation Specialist at the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies in Bloomington, and as a high school speech and English teacher. Christine is a double alumna from Illinois State University having received a B.A. in Communication Studies Teacher Education (with recognition as a Bone Scholar) and a M.S. in Communication.
Harriett Steinbach joined the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning team in summer 2017. She previously worked for 10 years in the Dean of Students Office at Illinois State University. Serving in several capacities, Harriett worked most significantly with Parent and Family Services, off-campus living, leadership development, and community service. Prior to her time at Illinois State, Harriett worked at The Salvation Army and the McLean County Museum of History. Harriett received her B.A. in Political Science and History from Eureka College and her M.S. in Political Science with an emphasis in Public Service from Illinois State University.
Brooke Marvin joined the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning in April of 2017. She graduated from Illinois State University with honors and a degree in Psychology. While on campus, she participated and served on the board of several registered student organizations. She also worked in the Dean of Students offices while attending school. During her last year in school, she participated in Illinois State’s national student exchange program, where she completed her studies at California State University, Northridge. Prior to working at Illinois State, she worked as a Technical Writer and Account Manager in Santa Barbara, California. She is excited to be a part of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, and is a proud Redbird!
